Where Did Your Day Go?

Why measuring your time is the first step toward improving it.

Have you ever finished a long, demanding day and wondered what you actually accomplished? You attended meetings, answered questions, solved problems and responded to interruptions. You were busy from morning to evening. But were you spending your time on the work that mattered most?

For supervisors, managers and other professionals, the problem isn't always a lack of effort. Often, it's a lack of objective information about where the hours go.

What gets measured becomes visible

In Lean improvement, we observe the actual process before proposing solutions. We measure cycle times, delays, movement and other facts instead of relying on assumptions. Why not apply the same principle to your own workday?

Our perception of time can be misleading. A meeting that seems brief may consume a substantial share of the week. Small interruptions add up. Urgent requests can crowd out coaching, problem-solving and improvement work. A simple activity log makes these patterns visible.

Not all time serves the same purpose

Time Well Spent helps you examine activities using three practical Lean categories:

  • Value-Added (VA): Activities that directly contribute to a useful result or meaningful progress toward your goals.
  • Non-Value-Added but Necessary (NVAN): Activities required to operate, comply or coordinate, even if they don't directly add value.
  • Non-Value-Added (NVA): Avoidable delays, rework and other activities that consume time without contributing useful value.

These classifications are prompts for reflection, not judgments about your effort or the people you work with. Context matters: a meeting, for example, may be highly valuable or largely unnecessary depending on its purpose and outcome.

Turn observations into objective evidence

Time Well Spent is a simple browser-based tool designed to help you record daily activities as they happen. Start and stop the timer, choose an activity category, and review charts showing where your time went. View a day, a week or a selected date range to look for recurring patterns.

The goal isn't to fill every minute with more work. It's to find opportunities to reduce avoidable activity, protect time for meaningful work and make more informed decisions about your schedule.

Try a five-day experiment

  1. Track your activities as consistently as practical for five working days.
  2. Review the evidence. Which categories account for the largest share of your time?
  3. Ask why. What interruptions, unnecessary steps or recurring demands stand out?
  4. Choose one improvement. Try a small change such as protecting focus time, clarifying meeting outcomes or addressing a repeated interruption.
  5. Measure again. See whether the change actually improved how you spent your day.

You don't need a perfect record to begin learning. Even a short trial can reveal patterns worth investigating.

Help us improve Time Well Spent

We're inviting managers, supervisors and other busy professionals to try the free beta version and tell us what they think. Is it easy to use? Are the categories and charts helpful? What's missing? What would you change?

Your candid feedback—positive or negative—will help us make this tool more useful. During the beta, there's no purchase required. The app runs in your browser; activity records are stored locally in that browser on your device rather than sent to Sensei Solutions Group.
